Smith describes this as “research through imperial eyes”. Their stories became accepted as universal truths, marginalising the stories of the Other. Under this Western paradigm, colonisers, adventurers and travellers researched the indigenous Other through their “objective” and “neutral” gaze. In the first part of the book, Smith deconstructs the assumptions, motivations and values that inform Western research practices through exploring the Enlightenment and Positivist traditions in which Western research is viewed as a scientific, “objective” process. The second part focuses on setting a new agenda for indigenous research. The first part discusses the history of Western research and critiques the cultural assumptions behind research by the dominant colonial culture. According to Smith, “decolonization” is concerned with having “a more critical understanding of the underlying assumptions, motivations and values that inform research practices”.ĭecolonizing Methodologies is divided into two parts. Smith challenges traditional Western ways of knowing and researching and calls for the “decolonization” of methodologies, and for a new agenda of indigenous research. Professor Linda Tuhiwai Smith’s (Ngāti Awa, Ngāti Porou) essential text Decolonizing Methodologies is an extensive critique of Western paradigms of research and knowledge. Her father used to read to her all the time as he was a huge fan of fantasy literature. Growing up, Caroline Peckham fed on a strict diet of “The Beatles” and books. When she is not writing her novels, she can be found at the local pub trying to be cool, going to the gym or binging shows on Netflix. As such, she gets to see her parents any time she wants since they live in the little village that is famous as the place where Winston Churchill made his home. Peckham is a native of Kent and lives about ten minutes away from the home where she was brought up. Together, they run a crazy but amazing and fun Facebook group where they interact with their readers. While she started out writing on her own, she now works with Susanne Valenti, her sister, to write their novels. Caroline Peckham is a paranormal romance, new adult romance, young adult fantasy and urban fantasy novelist. Or, take the titular story, which bypasses any critique of capitalism or business, and follows a friendless kid and a terminal cancer patient as their lives intersect on a frozen lake. It has the dystopian near future aura, mixed with lovable/insidious corporate-speak, and finishes beautifully with the kind of moral quandary - and bittersweet selflessness - that typifies a quintessential Saunders story. This film was met with similar criticisms. Despite this, however, The Lightning Thief was enough of a box-office success to warrant a sequel film in 2013, called Sea of Monsters. Riordan has famously mentioned that he has never seen the Percy Jackson films, and in March 2016, he wrote an open letter to school teachers asking them not to show them to students in class. The film was poorly received by fans and critics alike, who said it deviated far too much from Riordan's original novel - and, in fact, the author had little-to-no hand in the creative decision-making. The first adaptation of Percy Jackson came in 2010, with a film version of The Lightning Thief starring Logan Lerman. With the immense popularity of the Percy Jackson books, it was only a matter of time before Riordan's world was brought to the screen. The daughter of a wealthy industrialist, she married horse owner and trainer H. Why would a thief take one priceless book and leave an equally valuable volume on the shelf? Valuable titles are missing, replaced by cheap reprints. But one look at the books tells Janeway something's wrong. As a young man, New York Times bestselling author John Dunning earned his living for several years working behind the scenes on the racetrack circuit. The first book in the series ‘The Way of the Shadows’ came out in 2008… It is a bold book that to some extent glorifies the work of assassins, justifies the work of prostitutes and paints thieves in at very least a grey fashion. This ‘one month’ wait between each book was almost unheard of and although it was a bold move… it paid off… why? Simple… people read the books within 30 days and wanted to have the next one in their hands instantly… It was in Brent Weeks’s own words “A huge gamble by the publisher’, but it was one that paid off.” When Brent Weeks wrote the Night Angel Trilogy his publishers weren’t prepared to make us wait a year for each book. This allows time for readers to finish a book, have a bit of a change and then re-visit a world about a year later… It takes a special kind of author to write three books and have them sold consecutively on a monthly basis… Typically a fantasy trilogy will take between three and four years from the first through until the last book is released. We talk business in the back room while the bartenders and bouncers run the club for us most of the time. The club is a legit business, but we also use it as a front for money laundering, working with various shady organizations in the city. My three best friends and business partners are here too, sprawled over furniture or leaning up against the walls, relaxed the way they always are when we’re in our domain. It’s good to be able to keep an eye on things even when we’re not out there in the thick of it. Sin and Salvation is one of the most popular clubs in this part of Detroit, so shit gets pretty rowdy and trouble could pop off at any time-something we do our best to keep from happening. We had the office areas soundproofed just enough that we can hear ourselves think while we go over business and shit, but not so much that a riot could break out on the dance floor or something and we wouldn’t be able to hear it. The musicfrom the main part of the club is more muted at the back. But if Harry forces him to choose, by laying into Camilla in his book, I have no doubt he will choose Camilla," a source said. "It is one thing for Harry to attack Charles he can take it on the chin. The belief is also that Charles will ban Harry from his coronation if the duke's book is critical of Queen Consort Camilla. "For the new king, still planning his coronation, this could not have come at a worse time." " Charles' retaliation could include not giving their children their prince and princess titles, and even withdrawing their own titles of Duke and Duchess of Sussex," Borkowski said. The book will be available to purchase in a number of different formats. While we met both the strong and fierce women, Amara and Morana in the mafia city, we see something completely different in Zephyr. Zephyr is as her nickname “rainbow” implies! She is a ball of energy and a breath of fresh air, so when she strikes a deal with the grumpy man that runs the city we readers know what's bound to happen. This book is the very definition of grumpy meets sunshine. Of course, like always, things don’t go according to plan. When a stranger arrives in his office knowing things from his past that she shouldn’t and hinting that they’ve met before even when he can’t remember this influences him to strike a marriage deal with her, with no actual desire to stick with this farce of a marriage. Alpha runs Los Fortis, knows the ins and outs and doesn’t mind getting his hands dirty. And get another piece of the puzzle that hopefully leads us to Tristan Caine’s missing sister. We are taken out of the mafia city and placed in the jungle where we we come face to face with the human trafficking ring, the Syndicate. In the fourth book in the Dark Verse series, we meet new characters, the energetic Zephyr and the grumpy beast of a man Alpha. The moment he dropped that towel in front of Greta, I was sold haha! He may be an annoying little prick but he was very lovable. Not come back and leave you all over again. The “one that got away” was suposed to stay away, After he left, it took 7 years and a tragedy to bring them back together and they were forced to face and resolved the unfinished business from 7 years ago. The last night he was there, things happened and the aftermath broke her. But as things progressed he had to suddenly return home. Over time he learned to (barely) open up to Greta. He always had a problem with his dad and the only way he knew how to cope with it was by acting out. Yes, he was 17 with tattoos and pierced all over including you know where! But he’s also a major prick. Elec’s mum had a job abroad for a year so Elec reluctantly had to endure living with people that he hated.Įlec was a problem for Greta because not only he was “So… fucking… hot.”. The story revolved around Greta whose life changed after her stepbrother Elec came to live with her family when she was 17. “I’ve been ready since the day I walked in the door, took one look at you and realized I was fucked.” The relationship might be weird, but not exactly taboo. It turned out, this was a pretty good read. I’ve never read Penelope Ward’s works before so I didn’t have any idea how the book was going to be. It sounds illicit and dirty and oh so tempting. I have to admit, the first thing that got my attention to this book was the title. |
